The Shockadin FAQ thread!

EDIT: BIGOTS MAY GO NO FURTHER. GET OUT.
DISCLAIMER:
Much of the following is based on personal opinion, however I deem myself rather qualified to answer as I have played, and indeed, continue to play and experiment with offensive holy paladin builds. :)
Summary:
(
Thanks to Squishalot
)
Recommended builds:
Levelling/Daily Quests/Solo stuff.
Sub-optimal PvP Build
Stat Priority:
Spell Power>Hit (till capped)>Crit>Intellect>Mp5>Haste
Weapons:
1h + shield, assuming both have spell power.
Usage:
Anywhere outside of serious PvP and PvE, assuming max level at both. Perfectly fine in lower battleground brackets.
_______________
Q: What is a good Shockadin build?
A:
Well, it depends what you want it for! Shockadin builds are popular while levelling as a Holy Paladin. I myself have levelled 3 paladins since WoTLK, one from 70 to 80, one from 30~ to 80, and one from 1 to 70, so far. The build I usually finish up with before going to respec at 80 is..
..here.
(Levelling/Solo PvE Build)
The build focuses around increasing your DPS and burst as much as possible while trying not to sacrifice too much in the way of longevity and healing capability. The final build is most certainly suitable for solo work as a Holy Paladin should you wish to remain a Shockadin at 80. I myself respecced to a proper Holy PvE/PvP dual build, but you could certainly have this as your offspec.
However, if you are already level 80 and fancy using a Shockadin build in PvP, I should warn you that Shockadins are no longer viable in this aspect of the game. At all. Perhaps in 3.2, what with the return of Exorcism, but for the meanwhile, bare in mind that speccing this way is merely for fun and experimentation, and not for arena.
A Shockadin PvP spec would look like
this!
_______________
Q: Can I heal using either of the builds above?
A:
Yes, you
can
heal with this build, at
any level
outside of Level 80 raids and heroics (and possibly some of the harder late-WotLK 5 mans such as HoL) Of course, a proper holydin spec is preferable for healing purposes, but its not mandatory at all before serious raiding.
_______________
Q: I notice you didnt link a raid/heroic PvE build. Why?
A:
Because Shockadins cannot enter a PvE situation and expect to do well. Our DPS isnt high enough, and our healing is very poor compared to a properly specced Holy Paladin. We cannot hybridize, you are much better off speccing Retribution if you wish to DPS, or full holy if you wish to heal. If you want a hybrid.. play a different game, I'm afraid. (EDIT: OR, try protribution:

)
_______________
Q: What armor should my shockadin wear?
A:
Shockadins typically wield the same gear their healing brethren do. However, usually a Healing holy paladin will focus on Haste over Mp5. We, due to having very little use for Haste ourselves, seeing as all our magical offensive abilities are instant, much prefer Mp5 if we have to choose between the two. However, crit is much more important than both, and spell power MUCH more important than both.
Intellect is also important, but only until you have enough to last a comfortable amount of time (possibly to the extent that using Seal of Wisdom ensures you never run out of mana whilst merely soloing), you do not require any more.
Hit on spell plate is rare (non-existant), but if you can get it on weapons, rings, trinkets, amulets, cloaks, and so forth, then it's a valuable stat. Try to aim for 4% spell hit rating (So you're capped against mobs your own level).
(For an example of "Holy Paladin gear", view our WoTLK sets,
here.
The Holy Paladin sets are the stuff with intellect and spell power on them.
So,
Intellect (Until you have "enough")>Hit(Until spell capped at 4%)>Spell Power>Crit>>Mp5>Haste.
_______________
Q: What weapons should my Shockadin wield?
A:
Almost always a 1 handed sword/mace(/axe?) with "Caster" stats (Usually Spell power.. Intellect, Spirit, Mp5, Crit, Haste, Hit.. Shockadins do NOT have any use for Spirit though, so only take a spirit weapon if no one else wants it and the rest of the stats would be an upgrade :) ) and a shield, usually any shield with spell power is good for you.
However, at lower levels, especially before outland, you will have difficulty finding suitable weapons outside of the AH, or lucky world drops. In this instance, I recommend wielding a solid 2 handed weapon, primarily, and carry around an "Of the Eagle" or "of Intellect " or "Of healing" or any similar random enchanted shield and 1 handed combination. 2 handers with "Caster" stats are preferable over 2h with "melee" stats, but very very rare, so just get what you can find.

Updated - 17th of March. Made the original post easier to read, de-lollified some of the phrases, removed repetition, and updated some of the specs. Also removed reference to the old Ret/holy PvP healer build, which is long-defunct.
Feel free to ask any questions you think I've missed and I'll try to include them in the list above. Would be nice if this was added to "Helpful Paladin Threads" also, since Shockadin questions come up quite a lot.

Shockadin really hasn't been viable in arena after its nerf in the previous patch.
Well, if we're being totally honest, Shockadin hasnt EVER been viable. At least not the traditional Shockadin. I believe I made it clear that the "Arena Shockadin" build I posted was NOT the traditional Shockadin. :)

No, it's been viable. Especially in BC. But now, it's really, literally, not viable.
And yes, I realize that. Also, it's awkward to level Shockadin when you can just level Ret, and get things done much faster in terms of efficiency. In fact, leveling Prot NOW would actually be faster then Shockadin. But in terms of doing it if you want to, yeah Shockadin would be fine.
I suppose it depends on your definition of viable.

I know this shouldn't be in the FAQ to give people false hopes but i just had to boast a little.
Pre-3.1 with the IoL nerf i was able to solo heal 75% of OS10 (no drakes) using the current ret/holy hybrid build.
The amount of mana you get back from JotW is insane and seeing as Caean has quit wow in order for me to raid for his guild the amount of skill required is quite immense to pull this off.
Your ret/holy hybrid build for 2v2 arena looks great btw.
Havn't had the time to read all this through but i'll definitily add it to bookmarks for further reference.

Bump.
Not sure, Arannia, if you want to take this guide and neaten it up a little - the Q&A methodology feels a little TL;DR for most of the internet denizens. Having a few summary headings for things like Recommended Spec, Recommended Gearing (eg, stat priority), and how you would use a Shockadin would probably make it easier to read.
Just some thoughts :)

The leveling build you have up there seems like it could use some work. You stop right at Holy Shock so you can work your way up in the ret tree for Fanaticism. It seems like a good idea at first cause Fanaticism is a powerful talent but the problem is that by the time you get it you're already lvl 78. There are 3 talents in the holy tree you skipped which could have benefited you more during the earlier stages of leveling than focusing for Fanaticism. These talents are Holy Guidance, Judgements of the Pure, and Enlightened Judgements. These increase your damage, haste and hit rating which is great because you'll have these when you're level 56.
I changed your leveling build around into this.
Just my two cents. Feel free to correct me on any mistakes I've made since I rarely play my Paladin.
The problem with the talents above amount to this:
Holy Guidance: At first, visibly, a nice talent. However, the spellpower gained is lackluster at this level due to the lack of intellect you would be able to achieve. Spell power, as an offensive stat, isnt even much good until outland~ levels anyway.
Judgements of the Pure is.. okay. The haste is.. okay. Nothing spectacular. It wont give you an additional melee swing to proc SoR or whatever.
Enlightened Judgements is nice. But at this stage, we can pick up better talents in Retribution.

And before the naysayers come in, yes, you CAN heal with this build. AT ANY LEVEL outside of Level 80 raids and heroics. If you're not an idiot and know how to heal. :) Of COURSE a proper holydin spec is preferable, but its not mandatory. ^_^

I've been intrigued by the idea of the Shockadin since I heard of it, and I stopped in to check out this FAQ thread in hopes of getting some insight. There is some insight here, but it's a bit confusing. There are lots of As, but no Qs. What are the questions being answered?

Err... they were there. Now they're not. Ffs. I'll edit some questions in. Thanks for pointing this out. I think someone has been messing with my FAQ. ¬_¬
EDIT: Phyxed. There's something fishy with the code. :S (Without the *)
