Afterlives: Revendreth premieres tomorrow, September 17th, featuring Sire Denathrius and possibly Garrosh Hellscream. This cinematic is the fourth and final in a series of
Shadowlands
shorts examining each covenant in greater detail.
Let us know your predictions for the cinematic in the comments!

Who is Sire Denathrius?
Sire Denathrius, featured on the Revendreth teaser art, rules the land from Castle Nathria and created the Venthyr in his image. He's been in the news recently due to
Infiltración enemiga - Prefacio
, a book that strongly hints at a partnership between the Jailer and the Nathrezim to conquer the other cosmic forces. Denathrius may be a Nathrezim himself, a theory further supported by the book's location in the
Spire of Unseen Guests
, as "unseen guest" is what the nathrezim call themselves. Denathrius' guards in the
Afterlives
teaser also look quite similar to Dreadlords, with wings, hooves, and horns.
Enemy Infiltration Analysis
This tower overlooks Sinfall, the location of Denathrius' former workshop where he conducted dark experiments (
En las ruinas de la rebelión
). The Light, sensing his dangerous magic, destroyed the Ember Ward and reduced this area to rubble (
Refugio de Revendreth
), which takes place before we arrive in the zone. There's several clips from the
Afterlives
teaser that could be from Denathrius' workshop--perhaps we'll see the destruction covered in this cinematic. It would fit with the other animated shorts dramatizing important events: Devos helping Uther ascend early, the betrayal of Maldraxxus houses, Ara'lon sacrificing his Ardenweald grove.
Sire Denathrius appears to be a gracious host when we first enter Revendreth, trusted enough by the Winter Queen in Ardenweald for her to beg for aid. But he has a darker side, as we later face him as the
final boss of Castle Nathria
. So far the
Afterlives
cinematics have featured sympathetic characters, so it will be interesting to watch one featuring the POV of an established villain.
Return of Garrosh?
Revendreth is a dark, Gothic zone with ominous castles, Victorian towns, and nightmarish creatures. The Venthyr Covenant punishes those condemned to Revendreth for their sins in life, allowing them to atone for their crimes, rather than spend an eternity in the Maw. Players who ally with the Venthyr will come across Kael'thas Sunstrider, also sent to Revendreth. But it looks like the
Afterlives
cinematic will focus on a villain from another expansion: Garrosh Hellscream from
Mists of Pandaria
.
Every
Afterlives
cinematic so far has highlighted a story from a different era of WoW's history:
Bastion
covered Arthas' death in
Wrath of the Lich King
,
Maldraxxus
saw Draka spying on the Burning Legion, and
Ardenweald
showed what happened after Ursoc's defeat in the
Legion
Emerald Nightmare raid. Highlighting Garrosh's fate would delve into yet another part of WoW's unfinished history.
Garrosh Hellscream's character arc followed a similar one to Sylvanas in recent patches, a Warchief whose ambitions led to outright rebellion by members of the Horde. Originally a strong leader in the Northrend campaign, Garrosh grew power-hungry when appointed Warchief, pursuing any means necessary to achieve Orc supremacy. He is responsible for the bombing of Theramore, destruction of the Vale of Eternal Blossoms, the attempted murder of Vol'jin, city-wide war in the Siege of Orgrimmar, and escaping to AU Draenor to unify the Iron Horde.
In the
Afterlives
trailer, we see an unnamed orc in a pose reminiscent of
War Crimes
, the novel documenting the fallout from his destructive actions in
Mists of Pandaria
:
If this is Garrosh, it also raises an interesting point about how souls are assigned to their realms. When Sylvanas ends her life in "Edge of Night," it looks like she is sent straight to the Maw. At this point in her political history, she hadn't committed as many atrocities as Garrosh did upon his death in WoD, so it doesn't make sense why he has a chance at redemption and she doesn't.
Afterlives: Bastion
even implies that without Uther's interference, Arthas may not have been thrown into the Maw directly either. So it's possible that the Jailer manipulated Sylvanas' experience in the afterlife as part of his plan to have her ally with Death.
Possible Pre-Patch Date?
Blizzard announced the
Shadowlands
expansion date immediately after
Afterlives: Bastion
premiered. This has led many players to wonder if we will get the pre-patch announcement after
Afterlives: Revendreth
, with roughly two weeks notice before it drops. Players have started to
receive emails
announcing that time is running out on BFA mounts and Blizzard has put
pre-patch data in the background downloader
too.
A probably pre-patch date would be September 29th, although at the time of writing this post, we've had no official two-week notice for the end of the PvP season, and that's a pretty standard blue post.
