Consume Weapons to Empower Jaithys, the Prison Blade - Two Handed Sword from Kel'Thuzad
20/06/2021 a las 18:48
The final two encounters in the Sanctum of Domination raid drop weapons with unique special effects, such as
and the recently showcased
, and today we're highlighting
, a curious two-handed sword which consumes other items to empower itself. While so far untested on the PTR, we've datamined several related spells which give us a good idea of how the cannibalistic weapon will function in patch 9.1.
A consumed weapon is
(as if it were disenchanted), creating a
which is then used to empower the Prison Blade.
is the bonus proc gained from this sacrifice, which ranges in effectiveness, presumably based on either the value or amount of weapons fed to Jaithys. Five versions have been found so far, incrementally increasing the proc rate and damage, as well as granting a Strength buff at higher levels. Most interesting is that consuming weapons this way actually
decreases the sword's stat budget
at each step, effectively trading out secondary stats in exchange for the proc, resulting in
at the highest level - this is clearly a balancing mechanism to keep the raid weapon from becoming far and away more powerful than other weapons of the same item level.
- 1 RPPM, dealing 646 additional Physical damage.
- 1.5 RPPM, dealing 646 additional Physical damage.
- 1.5 RPPM, dealing 646 additional Physical damage, and granting 14 Strength for 3 seconds.
- 1.5 RPPM, dealing 646 additional Physical damage, and granting 28 Strength for 3 seconds.
- 2 RPPM, dealing 646 additional Physical damage, and granting 28 Strength for 6 seconds.
The damage and strength buff both appear to increase with item level, though keep in mind that not all of these spells may actually be used.
Functionally, the sword's voracious appetite would seem to give players a supplementary use for extra dungeon and raid drops which might otherwise be disenchanted or vendored, though there are some stipulations - datamined error messages state that "unworthy" items will be rejected, indicating a quality or item level requirement (such as epic only weapons) and reaffirming that only weapons may be sacrificed.
Still, the question which remains of exactly how the empowerment will work, and what will be required to maintain it. It appears to be a permanent change, although we haven't been able to fully test the weapon, so it may revert over time and it isn't quite clear exactly how many weapons need to be fed to the sword in order to empower it fully. That said, it's important to note that the tradeoff between stats and the proc should keep it more or less balanced, rather than the already highest item level weapons in the raid becoming
than its allotted itemization budget once empowered. While there will undoubtedly be a small difference in performance between the sword's empowered and unfed states for some classes, the tradeoff keeps it reigned in, in some ways making the effect designed more for flavor than raw power.
While there are several operating theories, it's unlikely we'll find out for certain how the weapon will work before the
Sanctum of Domination raid releases on July 6th
. The idea of a sword which eats other weapons is a very cool concept which meshes well with both the Maldraxxus and Maw themes represented in Shadowlands, and while there is a small concern that keeping the weapon empowered may require a lot of funneled drops or continued maintenance, it will also be interesting to see how balanced the tradeoff between raw secondary stats and the proc will be -
in Battle for Azeroth was (in)famous for being noticeably stronger than normally itemized weapons, even at the expensive of item level for Blood Death Knights and Fury Warriors, although stat weights have changed considerably in Shadowlands. At the same time, secondary stats perform better in multitarget situations than single target damage procs, so enterprising players may seek out the small advantage of obtaining multiple copies of the weapons, keeping one empowered for single target encounters and another unfed for use in Mythic+.
