The official product description reads:
Forged according to the Jailer's will, the Helm of Domination was to be the vessel of Death's influence on Azeroth. The Nathrezim imprisoned the spirit of the orc chieftain Ner'zhul within the helm, granting him command over a vast army of undead Scourge. The fallen Prince Arthas Menethil freed the Helm from the Frozen Throne, donning it to take up the mantle of the Lich King.

The Helm of Domination has a storied history beyond the product description, with new details revealed over the course of Shadowlands. Linking the helm to the Jailer was a brand-new revelation, revealed in a flashback cutscene triggered by collecting legendary memories. The Jailer's involvement then places notable events from Warcraft's past in a new light--such as a potential link between the Jailer and the
Nathrezim as his agents
As players further progress on the Torghast quests. they will see the Jailer attempt to seize control of Bolvar through the
fractured shards of the Helm
. When Bolvar resists, the Jailer exclaims "A failure. Like those who came before you!" which highlights the sinister qualities of the helm. Following Bolvar's recovery, Calia and Taelia have a conversation discussing the Jailer's harmful magic that controls the helm:
Calia: The specter of my brother hangs over all of us like a shroud. His choices were his own, though it does seem his fate was shaped in part by the hand of the Jailer.
Taelia: My father's fate as well. The helm... that blade... were they instruments of the Jailer all along?
And of course, the helm was featured in a spectacular way in the Shadowlands cinematic, as Sylvanas claims the helm and shatters the veil, disrupting the cycle of failed Lich Kings. The shards left behind were then used to
transport us into the Shadowlands
and forge a connection between Oribos and Azeroth
Atadura al hogar
. Bolvar speaks frequent of the dark controlling power of the helm, both in the short story
"We Ride Forth"
and the introductory questline:
Highlord Bolvar Fordragon says: When the helm rested upon my head, it took all my will to keep its insidious power in check. Many times, I nearly faltered.
Highlord Bolvar Fordragon says: I could sense a dark presence at the edge of my consciousness. Not Arthas... not Ner'zhul. Something... else.
Highlord Bolvar Fordragon says: It is that very presence I sense lurking beyond the shattered sky above.
Highlord Bolvar Fordragon says: I dare not travel with you. Even free of the helm, I fear I would become bound to the will of its true master.
While the helm is a fitting tribute for Blizzard's 30th anniversary, as it's an iconic reminder of the company's legacy, Warcraft players can't helm but wonder if this is yet another hint we'll see Arthas in Shadowlands. More and more characters appear in Shadowlands that were affected by his actions, the
cinematic raised questions about his death, and now the Twisting Corridors story and cinematic draws parallels between Anduin and Arthas.
Do you think we could learn more about the Helm, Frostmourne, or Arthas at BlizzConline?
