Riding and Epic Mounts in Classic WoW
07/06/2019 a las 08:41
With Riding unlocked this past week on the WoW Classic beta, we thought it was a good time to recap the Classic WoW Riding System and how Epic Mounts worked.
Starting at level 40, players are able to learn how to ride mounts. Mounts increase your movement speed by a certain amount and are used for traveling around most zones. Mounting takes 3 seconds and you cannot mount up in combat.
Each race has their own Riding skill, which can be learned for before discounts, starting at level 40. These riding skills are:
Equitación para no-muertos
After learning a riding skill, you're able to buy mounts from that specific race (Humans can buy Horses, Orcs can buy Wolves, etc). Mounts can have either Rare or Epic quality, which have different movement speeds, are usable at different levels, and cost different amounts of gold. In the table below, you can see the costs:
Cost Before Discount
Additionally, you're able to move slightly faster while mounted when you equip a
Zanahoria pinchada en un palo
. This Trinket is a quest reward from the Zul'Farrak quest
Aguijones de mitril
, a Blacksmithing craft, is an enchantment to your boots that stacks with the trinket and also increases your mounted speed.

While players can purchase slow mounts at level 40, they can purchase fast mounts at level 60. If you are interested in purchasing a mount from a different Race within your faction, you are able to! However, you need to first reach Exalted reputation with that race's faction before the vendor shows you the option to purchase mounts. Check out our
Classic Epic Mount Guide
for a list of all the Epic faction mounts like
and the vendors who sell them!
There are two different ways of reducing the cost of your mount and mount training:
Being Honored with the faction you're trying to buy the mount from
Being Rank 3 in PvP
These two discounts would count together as a 20% price reduction, if you have them both.
This means you will save if you're trying to buy an epic mount (which usually costs ), which is pretty significant. Note that these mounts are also considered
Bind on Equip
, meaning that if someone else has both of these discounts they can buy it for you.
As a special note, Paladins and Warlocks have quests for Epic Mounts, but they will not be available at Classic Launch as they require Dire Maul, a dungeon unlocking in Phase 2.
As is still a hefty amount of gold in Classic WoW, we have a
in our Classic Epic Mount Guide.

Alternative Riding Systems
Patch 1.12.1 introduced a new riding system, where players trained Apprentice and Journeyman riding and all race-specific riding skills were removed. This system is not present in Classic WoW. Here is our question and answer from the WoW Classic Press Summit:
From the classic demo, we learned that the riding system is the older race riding one, instead of the profession-esque system we have today in modern wow introduced in Patch 1.12.1. What was the train of thought behind this decision?
The modern riding system was introduced in one of the later 1.12 patches, and as we were discussing it, we felt this system was added to prepare the game for Burning Crusade, which had the ability to ride flying mounts.
For most of the history of WoW Classic, throughout 2004 and 2005, we had the older mount system. It just felt more authentic to that game, to use the older one instead of one that just laid the groundwork for another expansion.
Unarmored Mounts - Not in Classic
Prior to Patch 1.4, unarmored epic mounts were available to purchase. These mounts will not be present in Classic WoW at all--not even in early phases.

We also asked about this at the WoW Classic Press Summit:
We know a lot going into the six-phase plan now, and the decision on progressive itemization cleared a lot of remaining topics up. Is there any content that’s a grey area you’d like to clarify? For example, can you get old-school mounts up until a certain phase? Or will Classic WoW only have the current vendor exalted mounts.
It is the current vendor mounts for 1.12. We aren't putting back the unarmored mounts. We just talked about this recently internally. We know some people are interested in them, but we don't want to put them in for a limited period of time, because we didn't want to influence people through their first leveling experience. Especially people coming back for the first time. We don't want people to feel like they have to rush. If you want to level slowly and enjoy the journey, you should. That's how I like to play--taking it slow, running every dungeon.
