, continues with a look at the leveling changes coming in 9.0.

As we previously covered,
Shadowlands
will include a level squish
, pushing current level 120 characters back down to level 50, with the new
Shadowlands
content in 9.0 allowing players to make their way up to 60.
Every Level Is Meaningful: Shadowlands will introduce a new leveling system, meant to provide a meaningful sense of advancement with every level achieved. Current max-level characters will begin Shadowlands at level 50 and work toward the new level cap of 60.
The new system will also include a round of updates to help smooth out the awkward chronology between expansions. In a continually evolving game world, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to start a new character in a post-
Catacylsm
Azeroth, only to move to a
Burning Crusade
Outlands, then jump back to
Mists of Pandaria
. The leveling squish will break leveling into three distinct parts.

Level 1-10
New characters will go through one of several introductory tutorials from level 1-10 to learn the basics of the game, depending on your race or class, so Death Knights for example will have a unique experience. This will involve teaching players how to do navigate the game world, the basics of their class, and a mini-dungeon.
Level 10-50
Players will be able to speak to Chromie to go back in time to whichever previous expansion they desire. While players can switch between expansions, the intent is that any of them will be able to take you from level 10-50. If you like the story of
Wrath of the Lich King
, you can go from level 10 all the way to 50 in Northrend; if you enjoy
Legion
, Chromie will take you to the Broken Shore, but you don't have to do both unless you want to. Similar to the current environment, quests, mobs, and rewards will scale with you, allowing you to spend more time in the areas you want, just without the current expansion bracket restrictions. This means you can choose to level entirely through one or a combination of:
Eastern Kingdoms & Kalimdor (post-Cataclysm)
Outlands (
Burning Crusade
)
Northrend (
Wrath of the Lich King
)
Cataclysm Zones (
Cataclysm
)
Pandaria (
Mists of Pandaria
)
Draenor (
Warlords of Draenor
)
Broken Isles (
Legion
)
Kul Tiras & Zandalar (
Battle for Azeroth
)
Level 50-60
You'll visit the Shadowlands like everyone else. The first time through will be a mostly linear experience, introducing you to the story and factions starting in Bastion, then on through Maldraxxus, Ardenweald, and Revendreth, working with the leaders of the four Covenants that rule each zone - this is a curated experience with fixed levels in each zone, so players follow the story and power growth feels natural when moving from one area to the next. After one character has finished the leveling process, alts can skip straight to pledging to the Covenant of their choice and visit the zones in the order of their choosing.
