We learn what Khadgar has been up to throughout Battle for Azeroth, and while it's nothing shocking, he was a fan-favorite character in Legion so any news is good news! There's also a fun reference to his model change between MoP and WoD, which made him much more youthful. If you ask Khadgar about this, he'll simply smile--so his appearance change is canon now.
After leading the fight against the Iron Horde and Legion, Khadgar has retreated to Karazhan hoping to find a solution to healing Azeroth in one of the library's ancient tomes instead of participating in more bloodshed.
Archmage Khadgar says: It seems our victory on Argus was a hollow one. With his final blow, Sargeras has done much more than bury his blade in the heart of our world.
Archmage Khadgar says: I had hoped that after the war against the Legion, the people of Azeroth would build a new future together. But now the unity we forged has been shattered.
Archmage Khadgar says: As the life essence of Azeroth bleeds out, the leaders of the Alliance and Horde scramble to claim it as a resource. Blades are drawn, and the tides of war are rising once again.
Archmage Khadgar says: But I will not take up arms against heroes on either side. Not after all we've been through.
Archmage Khadgar says: Instead, I will go to Karazhan and confer with my old mentor, Medivh. Perhaps somewhere in his ancient texts lies the knowledge needed to heal this world.
As Karazhan is filled with curious ghosts and volatile artifacts, Shaw has been checking up on Khadgar throughout Battle for Azeroth. Khadgar seems quite content living in Karazhan and cataloging his artifacts, with no plans to rejoin public life at the current time. Embittered by the constant faction wars sowing discord, he much prefers to focus his time on his weapon collection in the Menagerie and fixing the Curator.
It is always a pleasure to see you, and your new friend Captain Fairwind is most entertaining. I appreciate that you have made no attempt to persuade me to resume my public duties. The recent armistice has given me a faint glimmer of hope that one day the children of Azeroth will realize that more unites them than divide them, but I temper such expectations.
Here is the report I've prepared for you regarding the status of our current artifacts. They continue to be stored in the no-longer secret trophy room in the Menagerie area. Our old friend the Curator continues to decline, though I am attempting to repair him. For the time being, he is still erratic.
