Wow, ok two things:First of all, whipping didn't say EVE sucked, he said it was boring to him for given reasons. Why do you feel the need to argue his points? Really? So you have a different opinion, don't act as if he said anything wrong. The only thing you could really dispute is number 5 since there are in fact hotkeys. Second, your skimming skills are terrible. My reference to space MMOs and WoW are that they need to be more fluid. You know, like a Wing Commander, Jumpgate, Earth & Beyond, X-Wing, TIE Fighter, or X-Wing Versus TIE Fighter game. Casual players want slightly more fast paced experiences. This is because they don't have much time to play and don't want to spend their entire play session getting squat accomplished or watching a ship fly from point A to point B with two clicks of a mouse. If you look at most "old" MMOs, you'll find that they are not fluid at all. That was the purpose of my comparison. It was pretty obvious, so wtf? I'm guessing you're an EVE fanboi.PS: EVE IS a good game and all of this SciFi MMO talk makes me want to reactivate it..
I'm definitely going to be giving both the new Star Trek and Star Wars (KotOR is amazing) MMOs a big chance when they are released. I feel that both of these games would bring much needed additions to the market.
EVE Online is not wow in space, and even if you want it to be it won't. everyone looks generally the same, you don't have 'Spells' or anything of the sort. rather, your character learns skills over time, which determine what you can do and how well you can do it. in my opinion, the skill system is perfect for a Sci-Fi MMO, primarily because it is large and daunting and can be confusing. large and daunting as it is, it offers a huge possibility for character customization. the other really big thing that EVE has going for it is the 'one world' model. as far as i know every mmo out there has multiple servers, at least after their playerbase reaches a certain point (usually a few thousand). EVE has one shard. when you do something noteworthy, or something dastardly, it could affect any player in eve, and everyone can hear about it and congratulate (or avoid) you. simply put, if eve were sharded, it would be dead.
There's no real reason it shouldn't work. As with most MMO's success or failure will depend more on how well it's executed and how well the setting is represented and integrated into the game mechanics...I'm quite looking forward to Bioware's Star Wars effort, I trust them to do a good job, and create a good mix of character-driven RPG play and some space elements, without turning the game into a space-trading fest. But honestly, so many other MMO's are released rushed and unready for play (witness Conan, that game could have been great with another year's dev time) that I'll be wary of jumping into any of them. I'm planning to let the post-release dust settle for at least 3 months before sneeking a peak.
